This week, on the stage of the „Toma Caragiu” Theatre, audiences are invited to encounter characters representative of various human types, situations full of humour, and stories that cross cultural and generational boundaries. Romanian 20th-century drama meets texts from world literature in a varied programme that depicts an interwar bourgeois microcosm whose members are trapped in an environment dominated by gossip and intrigue, the playful confrontations between two Balkan families, and a fascinating adventure that takes place in the heart of the jungle.
GAIȚELE – Friday, 17 April, and Saturday, 18 April, at 6.30 p.m., main hall of the „Toma Caragiu” Theatre
One of the best-known plays of Romanian interwar drama, written by Alexandru Kirițescu, „Gaițele” (The Magpies) brings to the fore the story of the Duduleanu family, a symbol of a bourgeoisie adrift, imprisoned in its own clichés and prejudices. As a counterpoint, a love story emerges in which fragile souls try to free themselves from this closed world by seeking true love.
The performance captures hypocrisy, rivalries, and minor domestic dramas, building characters who remain recognisable today. „Gaițele” is a fresco of a world that remains surprisingly current, a play in which laughter turns into a bitter smile, inviting reflection on how we live, love, and relate to one another. These performances are sold out.
CUSCRII DIN TIRANA – Sunday, 19 April, at 6.30 p.m., main hall of the „Toma Caragiu” Theatre
A comedy full of energy and Balkan colour, „Cuscrii din Tirana” (The In-Laws from Tirana) captures the meeting of two families brought face to face by the imminent marriage of their children. Differences in mentality, pride, and prejudice trigger unexpected situations, in which situational and verbal humour intertwine with the tenderness and emotion born of human connection.
The performance pokes fun at cultural contrasts and social vanity, building a story about family and friendship, and above all about the power of love to bring together apparently opposing worlds.
CARTEA JUNGLEI – Sunday, 19 April, at 11.00 a.m., main hall of the Imaginario Animation Theatre
Inspired by the famous stories written by Rudyard Kipling, the musical „Cartea junglei” (The Jungle Book), the latest production in the repertoire of the Imaginario Animation Theatre section, invites the youngest audience members on a fascinating adventure alongside Mowgli and his friends. In a colourful, dynamic setting, the characters come to life and take children into a world where friendship, courage, and loyalty are put to the test.
Tickets can be purchased from the Box Office of the „Toma Caragiu” Theatre in Ploiești (telephone 0244.522.774) or online, by accessing the Programme of Performances section on the website www.teatruploiesti.ro.
