“The Film of Toma Caragiu”, special screening on the “Toma Caragiu” Theatre stage
On Wednesday, 4 March, 49 years will have passed since the death of Toma Caragiu, an emblematic personality of Romanian theatre and film, an artist whose stage presence shaped generations and remained vivid in the public’s memory through the strength, refinement and authenticity of his interpretations.
On this occasion, from 6:30 PM, in the hall of the “Toma Caragiu” Theatre, the audience will be able to watch the screening of the tribute documentary “Filmul alu Toma Caragiu” (“The Film of Toma Caragiu”), made in the Aromanian language and subtitled in Romanian. The project was initiated by Prof. Univ. Dr. Alexandru Gica, a mathematician passionate about the history of the Aromanian community. Cinematography and editing are signed by Coli Caranica and Iuliana Caranical, and the musical illustration of the film also includes songs composed following the meeting between Toma Caragiu and the Aromanian rhapsodist Hrista Lupci.
Starting from Greece and arriving, after numerous stops, in Bucharest, the initiatic journey reconstructed by the filmmakers takes on the qualities of a bildungsroman in images and sounds, sprinkled with the testimonies of those who knew him – among them director Stere Gulea and grandsons Dragoș Caragiu Gheorghiță and Ștefan Caragiu Gheorghiță.
The documentary, recently presented at the Eforie Cinematheque in Bucharest and at the Elpis Theatre in Constanța, offers spectators the opportunity to discover the actor’s artistic beginnings, his passions, the environment in which he grew up and the family climate he enjoyed – the discreet sources of an exceptional cultural personality. It is a sensitive and profound tribute that brings back to light not only the brilliant artist known to the public, but also the man behind the stage, with his Aromanian roots and the memories of a childhood spent in his native village in Greece.
Admission to this screening is free, on the basis of tickets that can be collected from the Theatre’s Box Office, telephone 0244.522.774.
We invite you to be alongside us on a day dedicated to the memory of a great artistic conscience, a creator who devoted his entire life to the stage and who will remain in our hearts through his memorable roles, his subtle humour, the nobility and depth of his spirit.
