This year, we are developing local infrastructure, educating through sport and decisively supporting the performance of Ploiești athletes!
The Mayor of the Municipality of Ploiești, Mr. Mihai Polițeanu, held today a press conference regarding the calendar of the main sports competitions that will take place in the city in 2026, as well as the directions assumed for the development of Ploiești sport.
The event was also attended by the President of the Romanian Boxing Federation, Mr. Vasile Cîtea, the legend of Romanian boxing, Mr. Constantin (Titi) Tudor, as well as the Director of the Ploiești Municipal Sports Club, Mr. Lucian Rădulescu.
Mayor Mihai Polițeanu outlined, in this context, the directions of Ploiești sport, the calendar of sports competitions that will take place this year in our city, and highlighted the status of the investment projects at the level of local sports facilities.
2026 Investment objectives:
- Sports facility at the „Lazăr Edeleanu” Technological High School – 2 basketball, handball and mini-football courts, green areas and relaxation spaces. The authorisation has been obtained, the works are about to begin.
- Sports facility at the „Nicolae Iorga” Secondary School – multiple sports courts (football, handball, basketball/volleyball), pathways, green spaces, modern fittings. The Documentation for the Endorsement of the Investment Works (DALI) has been approved, and after the approval of the budget, the procurement of the works, including design, will proceed.
- Sports hall at the „Sf. Vineri” Secondary School – new construction. The works were started by the „Sf. Vineri” Secondary School and were completed at 30%, after which the Municipality of Ploiești took over and initiated the related procedures for the continuation of the works. The current status of the works is at 35%.
- Sports hall at the „Toma Socolescu” Technological High School – building of a school sports hall. Financing carried out with non-reimbursable funds (POR) and from the local budget. In the upcoming period, the procurement procedure for the works and related fittings will begin.
- Sports field at the „H. M. Berthelot” Secondary School – rehabilitation works on the existing sports field. After the approval of the 2026 budget, the Documentation for the Endorsement of the Intervention Works (DALI) for the modernisation of the sports field will be procured.
- Sports field at the „Andrei Mureșanu” Secondary School – a financing application was submitted through POR, was admitted for funding, but to date the South Muntenia Regional Development Agency (ADR Sud Muntenia) has not concluded the financing contract.
- Acquisition of a boxing hall – the building on Mihai Eminescu Street was acquired, at the request of master Titi Tudor.
- Pumptrack & Skatepark at Ploiești West Municipal Park – the technical project is being finalised this month, the auction for execution follows.
- Football field, in partnership with the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), at Ploiești West Municipal Park – the Local Council Decision (HCL) was adopted for the takeover by the Ploiești Municipal Sports Club (CSM) of the lands. CSM and FRF are working on finalising the partnership.
Other municipal projects that have been submitted to the National Investments Company (CNI) and included in the synthesis list for the construction of school physical education halls:
- „Toma Caragiu” Secondary School;
- „George Emil Palade” Secondary School;
- „Victor Slăvescu” Administrative and Services Technological High School.
Starting from 2025, through the strategic policies adopted in this field by the Ploiești municipality, the introduction of sport into the social life of the seniors of our city and of persons with disabilities has been successfully achieved.
During the press conference, Mayor Mihai Polițeanu also announced the calendar of 2026 sports competitions, which will rebrand Ploiești as a sports city:
- Dracula Open – International boxing competition U19, U17, U15 – 15-22 February.
Returns to Ploiești, where it was previously held in 2024. International competition included in the European Boxing Federation (EUBC) calendar. The event will bring together over 500 athletes from 17 countries in the U19, U17, U15 age categories. Event held in partnership with the Romanian Boxing Federation and CSM Ploiești.
- U17 Individual National Championship – National wrestling competition (Greco-Roman, Freestyle, Women’s Wrestling) 6-8 March.
Competition organised for the first time in Ploiești. Almost 500 athletes estimated, from clubs across the country. Competition styles: Greco-Roman Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling, Women’s Wrestling. Ploiești will be represented by athletes from C. S. Petrolul. Stefan Rusu, the most decorated wrestler in Romania’s history, will also be present.
- 2026 European Championship Qualifiers – U18 Men’s Volleyball
Official qualification tournament for the U18 European Championship. The Ploiești group also includes the teams of Greece, Estonia and Ireland. Romania U18 is favourite in Group B. Ploiești has tradition in men’s volleyball. Event held in partnership with the Romanian Volleyball Federation and CSM Ploiești.
- Ploiești High Schools Cup – Local football competition. During the Easter holidays – 4-14 April.
- Regional Babybasketball Festival – Regional basketball event dedicated to children – 15-17 May.
Regional sports event of youth basketball. Over 500 young basketball players will participate. Competition reserved for athletes aged 9-10 years. Event held in partnership with the Romanian Basketball Federation and CSM Ploiești.
- Rising Stars Trophy – International junior competition in women’s artistic gymnastics – 8-12 July 2026.
International competition returning to Ploiești after 3 years. Estimated participation of 60-70 athletes from approximately 10 countries. Competition reserved for athletes aged 12-15 years. Event to be held in partnership with the Romanian Gymnastics Federation and the Prahova County Council.
- Special Olympics Romania National Games – the largest inclusive sports event in Romania – 28-30 August.
The largest inclusive sports event in Romania. Approximately 400 participants. Event held in partnership with Special Olympics Romania, Lions Club and CSM Ploiești.
- 2026 Tour of Romania – The Municipality of Ploiești is rejoining the route of the Tour of Romania cycling race, one of the most important national sporting events, confirming the tradition and significant role of our city in Romanian cycling. Event period: 9-13 September.
Over 150 athletes from 15 countries will participate. Races dedicated to children and cycling enthusiasts will also be organised. The Ploiești event will be held in partnership with the Romanian Cycling Federation and CSM Ploiești.
On this occasion, the chief mayor of the Municipality of Ploiești, Mr. Mihai Polițeanu, also referred to the fact that, through the strategic measures taken starting last year, the activity of the Ploiești Municipal Sports Club has been stabilised.
In turn, the Director of the Ploiești Municipal Sports Club, Mr. Lucian Rădulescu, stated that the established activities fitted within the allocated budget without any problems, with the over 800 licensed athletes of the club achieving remarkable performances during 2025: 256 gold medals, 223 silver medals and 220 bronze medals.
