“The World’s Spectacle – In memoriam Ioan Grigorescu”

Event dedicated to commemorating 95 years since the birth of writer and television producer Ioan Grigorescu

The “Ion Luca Caragiale” House of Culture of Ploiești, in partnership with Ploiești City Hall and with the support of the Prahova County Council, is organising on Monday, 20 October 2025, starting at 10:00, at the EUROPA Hall within the Prahova County Council, the cultural event “The World’s Spectacle – in memoriam Ioan Grigorescu”.

The event aims to bring back to the public’s attention the complex personality of the writer, journalist and television producer Ioan Grigorescu, born in Ploiești, one of the prominent figures of contemporary Romanian culture.

 The project aims to promote the cultural and journalistic heritage left as a legacy through the show “Spectacolul lumii” (The World’s Spectacle), a model of cultural and civic education that has inspired entire generations of viewers.

The event programme includes:

·         Opening remarks by representatives of the organising institution;

·         Evocative moment delivered by Mr. Jon Grieg, son of writer and journalist Ioan Grigorescu;

·         Screening of selected episodes from the “Spectacolul lumii” series, produced by Ioan Grigorescu and broadcast with the support of the Romanian Television Society (TVR).

The activity is part of the series of educational and cultural projects dedicated to high school students, promoting authentic values, respect for heritage and intercultural dialogue.
 Participation is free of charge, subject to availability of seats, and is based on prior registration at the email address: secretariat@casadecultura.ro.

The event is an invitation to reflection and gratitude for a personality who contributed significantly to promoting Romania’s image through culture, history and documentary work.

Ioan Grigorescu was an encyclopaedic spirit and a true cultural ambassador of Romania. He carried the image of his birth city, Ploiești, with dignity around the world, and the title of Honorary Citizen recognised not only his career, but also his contribution to the cultural prestige of the city.

At the same time, we remind our community that his name gives identity to a Ploiești school: “Ioan Grigorescu” Secondary School at 81 Izvoare Street.
