The European Commission has approved the Municipality of Ploiești’s project for purchasing new trams and modernizing the depot for these vehicles

The Ploiești Municipality was notified today by the European Commission that the evaluation of the funding application has been favorably completed, submitted by the Municipality of Ploiești, with a view to signing the financing contract for the project: Sustainable Mobility in Ploiești, Romania: Electric Tram Fleet Renewal (Mobilitate Durabilă în Ploiești, România: Reînnoirea Flotei de Tramvaie Electrice).
The European Commission grant, worth 9,000,000 euros, represents the maximum amount granted under the Just Transition Mechanism, run by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
The Municipality of Ploiești aims to implement an ambitious project, in close cooperation with international partners, through the purchase of 20 new trams, 18 meters in length, implicitly carrying out a major investment at the Tram Depot, by performing works on the roof and the beams of the running tracks.
The new trams will modernize urban passenger transport and will contribute to reducing carbon emissions in our city. They will be used on routes 101 and 102.
The lifespan of these trams is estimated at at least 30 years, with the first 8 years requiring no general repairs. This type of vehicle has a longer lifespan compared to buses or other transport systems.
The trams that Ploiești residents could benefit from have an entirely lowered floor, allowing easy access for travelers, including persons with disabilities.
Such a modern tram has a capacity of at least 100 people, of which 30 seated, and a maximum speed of 70 km/h, limited to 50 km/h.
The estimated duration of the contract with the supplier of the new trams will be 21 months, and the minimum warranty required is 5 years or 350,000 km.
Through this initiative, the Municipality of Ploiești is taking important steps towards a sustainable city of the future.
The modernization of the Ploiești Municipality fleet, which is 40 years old, makes urban mobility more efficient through: reducing carbon emissions, reducing noise levels, increasing safety and comfort for travelers, increasing accessibility and equal opportunities at the level of our community.
Together we are taking important steps for a modern, sustainable and non-polluting public transport system, adapted to the current needs of Ploiești residents!
