We close the first month of spring with a selection of performances that address the diverse preferences of audiences: a journey into the deep layers of memory, a comedy that satirises customs and characters from interwar society, the staging of a text written by the famous duo of the 1930s, Stroe and Vasilache, and the premiere of a musical that will take the little ones into the distant Indian jungle.
SUB APĂ (Underwater) – Friday, 27 March, 6:30 PM, “Toma Caragiu” Theatre Hall
The performance transforms the stage into a space where reality and the supernatural overlap, and those who are part of a tragedy submerged in the depths of oblivion struggle to maintain their balance above the troubled waters of their own consciousness. With suggestive scenography and a sound universe that evokes mystery and emotional fragility, “Sub apă” offers an immersive theatrical experience, in which water is not merely a symbolic backdrop, but the force that cleanses, transforms, and heals. A performance about the need to be heard, the courage to speak, and the strength to come out, even for a moment, into the light. The performance, scheduled to mark World Theatre Day, is part of this year’s edition of the “Artiștii pentru artiști” (Artists for Artists) Campaign, organised by UNITER.
BIRLIC – Saturday, 28 March, 6:30 PM, “Toma Caragiu” Theatre Hall
A humorous journey into interwar Romanian society, a production which, behind an entertaining comedy, conceals a fine satire that exposes the vices, shortcomings, and hypocrisy of the era. The characters and situations presented can easily be recognised in the current context as well.
The protagonist of the play, Costache Perjoiu, known as Birlic, a modest clerk from Fălticeni, is sent by his boss into the whirlwind of Bucharest life to save a company on the verge of bankruptcy. There, Birlic is confronted with a completely unfamiliar reality, a world dominated by amorous intrigues, superficiality, materialism, and a lack of moral principles. This performance is Sold Out.
DESCURCĂ LUME (Get By, Folks) – Sunday, 29 March, 6:30 PM, “Toma Caragiu” Theatre Hall
One of the most beloved productions of the Majestic Variety Theatre Section, “Descurcă lume” brings to the stage the amusing story of a young man who tries to rescue his friends from various predicaments. The text of the performance is an adaptation by Eugene Nacht-Stroe of the play “Firfirică”, written by the famous duo of the 1930s, Stroe and Vasilache.
An entertaining comedy whose action takes place in the Poiana Țapului villa of an old retired colonel. When his quiet life is disturbed by the possibility of an amorous affair being exposed, his son’s close friend Firfirică appears – a young man who tries to help everyone and often makes impulsive decisions without analysing the situation too much. This performance is Sold Out.
CARTEA JUNGLEI (The Jungle Book) – Sunday, 29 March, 11:00 AM, Imaginario Animation Theatre Hall – Premiere
Inspired by the stories written by Rudyard Kipling, the children’s musical Cartea junglei brings to the stage the adventures of Mowgli, the human cub raised by wolves and protected by his loyal friends, the panther Bagheera and the bear Baloo. Throughout his journey, Mowgli meets unusual characters and faces challenges that test him: from the cunning serpent Kaa to the noisy monkeys led by King Louie, with each new situation he encounters helping him to better understand the world around him and to discover the value of friendship, courage, and loyalty.
The performance, which will not be lacking in lively musical moments and energetic choreography, teaches children the importance of family, solidarity, and the bonds with those around us. This performance is Sold Out.
